Surge in cloud usage drives steep rise in cybersecurity spending

“The sharp uptake in cloud based technologies is fuelling a surge in Cybersecurity spending in the Middle East and North Africa region, according to a new industry report.
The SANS 2020 Cybersecurity Spending Survey shows that 71 per cent of those surveyed saw a need to increase spending on cloud security monitoring, while 53 per cent said cloud access security broker (CASB) cloud-specific tools were the focus. An additional 52 per cent saw a need to increase spending on staff skills training.
‘The SANS survey showed that rapid movement of corporate services and business applications to cloud-based technology is the biggest factor causing breakage in existing security architectures as well as driving most new security spending,’ says John Pescatore, SANS director of emerging security trends.
‘Cloud monitoring and cloud security access controls were the top two spending areas, followed by spending to increase security staff skills to deal with new technologies, such as the cloud, and to keep up with changes in regulations as well as new threats.’”

Veritas country manager says cloud governance misconceptions still a problem

“While businesses are becoming more cloud-savvy, misconceptions about cloud governance remain, according to Garth Scully, Veritas country manager for Canada.
Large enterprises have “without question” gained a better understanding of multi-cloud management and migration, Scully told Channel Daily News after the company’s recent Veritas Vision Solution Day, a full-day workshop for customers and partners in Toronto.
But 84 percent of the cloud architects and administrators working for those enterprises continue to believe the cloud provider is responsible for backing up cloud-based data, says Veritas’ Truth in Cloud 2019 Report. It’s a surprising number despite the prevalence of cloud services among today’s enterprises – 68 percent of them now consider themselves “intermediate” or “advanced” – a majority of whose responsibility includes the governance of cloud-based customer data.”
Enterprise open source usage soars aligned with cloud strategies, argues Red Hat

“Proprietary software usage is plummeting as enterprise open source projects are increasingly playing a strategic role in organisations, according to a new report from Red Hat.
The study, the company’s second State of Enterprise Open Source report, polled 950 global IT leaders, of whom 95% said open source was important to their enterprise infrastructure.
‘It’s safe to say we don’t need to ask ‘if’ anymore,’ Jim Whitehurst, president and CEO of Red Hat, wrote in the report’s foreword regarding enterprise OS usage. ‘We need to ask ‘why’ and ‘how.’ Looking at the report, the results indicate a market environment driven by collaborative innovation.’”
